The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has earmarked Rs 250 crore for Surat airport development in order to be able to handle the current passenger load as well as commence international operations. At its current capacity, the airport can handle about 36 flights, with a footfall of about 2,300 passengers daily.
The current infrastructure is posing a problem for the enhancement of services at the airport. At present operators such as SpiceJet, AirAsia and AirIndia operate from the airport. However, Indigo has announced plans to start operations from the airport by August 16. This could increase the number of flight flight handling to about 45 per day. Terminal expansion is therefore, the need of the hour.
In Feb 2018, drawings of the terminal building along with an estimate of civil and electrical work was sent.
