The South Western Railway (SWR) will run MEMU services on the city railway station-Whitefield line and DEMU services on the Banaswadi-Hosur line six days a week.
With Bangalore Metro taking up construction of a rail line from Baiyappanahalli to Whitefield, road traffic has become slow and elected representatives have been demanding short-distance train services to relieve the pain.
Railway minister Piyush Goyal announced the eight new services in Bengaluru on Friday. “A big relief to commuters between Baiyappanahalli-Whitefield & Hosur-Banaswadi, connecting IT hubs of the city to business areas,” he tweeted.
The train (no 06571) will originate from Banaswadi at 9.50 am and terminate at Hosur at 11am. The train will stop for a minute at stations such as Baiyappanahalli, Bellandur road halt station, Carmelaram, Heelalige and Anekal road station. It will return from Hosur at 11.15am and reach Banaswadi at 12.25 pm. Another service (no 06573) will leave Banaswadi at 12.40pm and terminate at Hosur at 1.45pm. It leaves Hosur at 3.20pm and terminates at Banaswadi at 4.40pm.
The train will cover about 20 km from Baiyappanahalli to Bellandur in less than 30 minutes while the road journey takes nearly an hour.
It is the also the first time the Railways has introduced train services on the Hosur line via Baiyappanahalli. Currently, there are about 10 trains that run on the Hosur-Yesvantpur and Hosur-Bengaluru City sections.
