The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has chosen nine cities in Uttar Pradesh as part of its overall plan to develop at least 50 new low-cost airports across the country in 2013-14. The cities identified for airport include Azamgarh, Allahabad, Agra, Aligarh, Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor, Meerut and Moradabad. These airports are likely to be developed using the public private partnership model.

Azamgarh is likely to become the fourth city in Purvanchal region of the state to find a place on the air map apart from Allahabad, Varanasi and Gorakhpur. The airstrip is located at Maduri on the Azamgarh-Faizabad Road. AAI has already begun work on providing a civilian enclave at Bamrauli airport.
