The proposed urban transport system in Varanasi has received in-principle approval from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). The Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has been appointed as the nodal authority for the public transport system.
Apart from this, funding will be provided through the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund of big corporates for cleaning the city and grooming the pools. It has been decided to operate the Rudraksha, aided by the Government of Japan, with a smart city. In addition, a strategy will be made to reduce the increased air pollution in Varanasi.
Upcoming public transport projects of Varanasi were discussed in the Prime Minister’s Office. RITES Limited is preparing a report for the feasibility of the multi-model urban transport system.
The first route of Light Metro will be from BHU to BHEL, while the second route from BHU to Beniabagh to Kashi has been shown. In the earlier report for the Metro, the second route was up to Sarnath, which has now been separated. Earlier, the Metro route was 29 km, which has been reduced to 25 km.
The light metro route from BHU to BHEL will be elevated, while the underground route will be prepared somewhere above the Kashi route. Apart from this, the route of the ropeway is proposed. Light metro will cost a total of Rs 7,000 crores, while ropeway will cost Rs 1,700 crores.
The plan for light metro and ropeway for Varanasi’s public transport system will be reviewed in November by the PMO. The RITES will submit final report by the first week of November. A team from the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs will also conduct a survey to see the feasibility of the transport system in Varanasi.
