The Government of Uganda is on course with that of China to construct a new facility under the name Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium at alternative 45-acre land in Erute, 3kms from Lira town.

The Ugandan Government is planning for financial assistance from China for the construction of Akii Bua olympic stadium. The 30,000-seater stadium was a pledge Pesident Yoweri Museveni in 2016 in memory of Uganda’s Olympic gold medalist, John Akii Bua, for his historic 1972 Munich Olympic gold medal triumph in the 400 metres hurdles. Upon completion, the Akii-Bua stadium will have an aquatic centre, indoor stadium, training ground and a modern hotel.

Officials are growingly becoming impatient with steady but rather slow progress and explained that no funds have been allocated for the stadium project in FY 2019/20. The ministry received US $176000 which was channelled to Lira district government. Lira district local government has received money from central government to facilitate the first phase of the construction of the Akii-Bua Memorial Stadium.

The money received was used for opening the boundaries of the land, clearing and leveling the field of 18.6 acres, construction of access roads and drainage channels. Kakooza added that due to under-funding, further activities on the stadium which stands at 4% have been put on halt.

Officials are trying to look for funding and the President requested that we make a formal proposal and application through ministry of Finance for the construction of the Akii Bua stadium to the People’s Republic of China under a grant and interest-free loan.
