Greater Chennai Corporation plans to construct six bridges and lay a grid of roads. The project is expected to ease traffic on the two roads. CMDA has sought the help of Centre for Urbanization, Buildings & Environment at IIT Madras to study the proposal. CMDA is looking at a grid of roads on six locations. While the civic body will construct bridges across Buckingham Canal, CMDA will explore the possibility of expanding connected roads at different locations.

The road expansion is planned to be carried out along the existing stretches, wherever the width of the road is at least 18m. The road along Buckingham Canal will be expanded. In some pockets, land will be acquired for the purpose. The whole concept is that the crowd should be able to reach from the side roads to either of the arterial roads within 10 minutes.

At present, three narrow bridges cross Buckingham Canal link the two toll roads between Thiruvanmiyur and Sholinganallur. Commuting between OMR and ECR continues to be difficult task. These bridges carry heavy traffic, on some days up to 12,000 vehicles. The initiative will make motoring easier between ECR and OMR.
