The central government has proposed to take up double laning of NH-44 from the next financial year keeping provision for four lanes, Communist Party of India-Marxist MP Khagen Das said. The work on Guwahati-Agartala National Highway (NH 44) will be an access to Bangladesh’s Chittagong international port. Union Road Transport and Highways Secretary Vijay Chhibber in New Delhi have assured that the first phase, the national highway would be made double-lane then it would become a four-lane highway, MP said.
Bangladesh government had permitted India to access the Chittagong international port and the development and widening of road from Sabroom border town of Tripura to Chittagong International Port is about 75 km. The work along the stretch is crucial. The government has also started preliminary works for building a 150-metre-long bridge over the Feni River in Sabroom for better connectivity with Chittagong.
