After transformation of Sringeri Mutt Road in Mandaveli to make access to the corporation school in the area safer, the civic body is now all set to refurbish the road near the corporation school next to the Independence Day park in Nungambakkam.
This is part of a bigger project (the mega streets programme) under which about 80km of interior roads leading to corporation schools, hospitals and other prominent areas will be cleared of encroachment and provided with footpaths making them accessible to all.
Under mega streets, the main focus is bus route roads. But it is these interior roads that are used by pedestrians more. So, consultants will be asked to identify streets around schools, study them and come up with designs to make them safer. One of the main reasons why these roads do not have footpaths is their narrow width. However, authorities plan to construct at least one footpath on one side of the roads.
For the Nungambakkam road, the civic body is working with experts to get designs for a footpath. This will act as a model for consultants, each of whom may be asked to take up at least 20km of interior roads along with bus route roads. These roads will have to be maintained by the road users themselves later to ensure they stay encroachment-free. The corporation is all set to call for tenders to appoint consultants for the projects.
