A global research hub which will provide critical information on earthquakes, global warming and other weather conditions is in its final stage of development at Guwahati University (GU).
The Stratospheric-Tropospheric Radar Centre, expected to be operational by February end, will be the first of its kind in the entire North Eastern Region of India. The system will be able to provide information on different types of thunderstorms by analysing vertical and horizontal wind shears. Depending on the magnitude of earthquakes, the system will be able to provide precursor earthquake information for regions falling between Myanmar and Nepal.
The over Rs 30-crore unit has been established by the physics department of GU under the guidance of Prof. Minakshi Devi and with the support of the Mumbai-based Union government-run Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research, and the Assamese government.
