A high profile advisory group chaired by Union Power Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia is likely to declare hydro power as a renewable energy and increase its share to 20 percent of the total generation by the 15th plan. This was announced by a senior power ministry official. The capacity must be raised to 80,000 MW over the next 19 years. There is a proposal to allow existing hydro generation orders worth 34,664 MW to be traded as renewable energy certificates (REC).

Against an identified hydro capacity of 148,701 MW only 34,664 MW has been developed so far.The capacity under construction is 12,414 MW, while the capacity so far awarded in five states including Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh is a record 75,306 MW.The delay is due to the development of hydro power projects, falling share of hydro power, delays in environment and forest clearances and high capital costs, he said.
