    IAEA team reviews nuclear regulatory infrastructure of India

    IAEA team reviewedInternational Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reviewed India’s regulatory framework for nuclear safety. International Regulatory Review Service (IRRS), coordinated by IAEA conducted the review. It concluded that Indian Nuclear Regulatory Body, the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB), is an experienced, dedicated and knowledgeable regulatory body for the protection of the public and environment. Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Officer of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC), Ramzi Jammal led the mission. The team included 16 experts from various parts of the world. The mission was designed to enhance the effectiveness of national nuclear regulatory infrastructure and also provided an opportunity or a quality exchange of information. The 16 day mission started with an entry meeting of IRRS team with the officials of AERB, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). The IRRS mission suggested that AERB should review the implementation of its policy and existing arrangements in current and future challenges in regulatory nuclear safety, to ensure it maintains independence in the performance of its regulatory functions.
