Indore civic body recalls notices to 40,000 property tax defaulters

IMC had in the survey report found variation between actual size and registered size of over 40,000 properties in city.

“On the basis of the GIS survey, notices were issued to owners with a minimum difference of 200 sqft area, with instruction to pay tax difference only for the current year. A total due of over Rs2.5 crore was calculated to be pending in name of these people,” said an IMC revenue department official.

“The difference amount ranged from Rs 50,000 to Rs1 lakh,” he pointed. The property owners immediately after receiving notices started protest against IMC and claimed that its calculation was not correct.

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan had also called up the IMC officials and asked them to address the issue.

The civic body officials had also planned to launch a recovery drive to collect dues from these people. But, after opposition from the owners, civic body has now stopped issuing notices and started calling back the notices that were issued to the owners.

MIC member Sudhir Dedge said that property owners were issued notices on wrong grounds. “The report prepared though GIS survey has based on wrong information and why should innocent property owners have to pay for their folly,” he said.

He claimed that many notices had wrong information of registered property such as construction area and open space among others.

IMC commissioner Asheesh Singh, however, said that notices were issued to property owners on the basis of GIS survey report. “We have stopped issuing notices and zonal staff has been instructed to cross check GIS data. On demands of public representatives, a redressal cell has also been formed. Property owners can raise a formal objection in case if they have received notice with wrong details of their property at the cell,” he added.
