It is those owning jets who are opposing the steel flyover, affirmed the City development minister K J George.
The minister said so on Friday at the inauguration of Iskcon’s midday meal programme. He said, ” Anyone travelling to the airport takes an hour or more to reach here. The proposed flyover will reduce that time. Only those who have their own aircraft are opposing this. The entire process has been made transparent and we are not hiding anything.”
The steel flyover project is a 1.791 crore project by Bengalore Development Authority (BDA) will be a six-lane steel flyover from Basaveshwara Circle to Hebbal that will eventually ease traffic pressure to the International airport at Devanahalli. The proposed project will be completed in 24 months and be open by 2018. It is estimated that as many as 2.68 lakh vehicles will use the flyover everyday.
The decision has drawn the ire of environmentalists, technocrats and citizens who are continuously organising large protests against the project, which will require the chopping down of 812 trees and a staggering cost of Rs.1800 crore.
The minister, further, admitting the cost escalation of the project added, ” This is because of the technical team’s suggestion. The distance was initially 67 km, but now with ramps and under bridges, it has increased as also the cost. We felt this is the best option to reduce traffic congestion.
