Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) International Airport – about 26 km from Varanasi, will become India’s first airport to have a national highway running under its runway. The proposal allows the expansion of the runway as well the expansion of NH 56.
Expansion of NH 56 received approval in 2013, however, not much development had taken place due to an alignment issue, officials said. With the new proposal of constructing an underpass, NH 56 can be converted into a four lane while also solving the Varanasi-Lucknow highway alignment issue.
Expansion of the runway from 2750m to 4,075m will enable the handling of big cargo as well as Boeing planes. AAI has approved the project proposal and work on the highway expansion as well the runway expansion will begin simultaneously.
