Meerut civic body raps EESL for not switching off street lights during day time

    Meerut Municipal Corporation

After finding street lights on during day time during an inspection, Meerut Municipal Corporation (MMC) authorities have written to the company responsible to check operations or face action.

The company in question, Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), was entrusted with the task of maintenance and operation of the street lights. However, as the company is yet to install a central controlling monitoring system, which helps in automatic operation of these lights, they have to be manually operated. During the inspection, it was found that most of the street lights were switched on, and hence leading to losses.

“An inspection was conducted in Meerut district to check the street lights which were found switched on during the day time. Street lights were found switched on in Madhavpuram, Brhampuri, Shastri Nagar, Ganga Nagar, Pallav Puram, Shradha Puri, Hazari ki Piyaau, Zaakir colony, Shyaam Nagar, Jagriti Vihar, Maliyana, Multan Nagar and other localities. This inspection was carried out over three days,” read the order issued by chief engineer Jitendra Kumar to EESL.

At present, there are at least 50,000 street lights in the city which are being maintained and operated by EESL. Under the partnership with the government, the company is responsible to install street lights and operate them too. According to the agreement, the company has to install a central controlling monitoring system worth Rs 5.8 crore. But since it is yet to be installed, they said they will operate it manually.

“Hence, you are instructed to see that the lights function properly and if a complaint is received again, then action in the form of an FIR will be taken,” read Jitendra’s order.
