A research paper titled “Study on structural grade lightweight concrete and composite concrete structure design” was unveiled by Nuvoco at University of Dundee in UK. The paper was presented at Euro Coal Ash 2019 by Nuvoco’s R&D team – Mr. Pranav Desai, Vice President, and Head Construction Development and Innovation Centre (CDIC) and Mr. Amith Kalathingal – Senior Manager.
At present, structural grade lightweight concrete is covered under the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) C330 and American Concrete Institute (ACI) 213R. This research paper will help Nuvoco establish themselves as the pioneers of this technology vis-a-vis product in India. The reason Structural XLite is becoming popular over other regular concrete is the fact that it is 25-40% lighter while having similar compressive strength.
The research aimed to study the significance of Expanded Clay Aggregate (ECA) proportioning (in a triple binder blended concrete mix of cement, fly- ash and silica fume at a constant water binder ratio) and study the plastic and hardened properties. It also studied durability, load reduction and other value engineering benefits of lightweight concrete compared to M25 grade normal concrete. The main advantages of structural grade lightweight concrete structure are lower dead load; improved seismic structural response; improved fire endurance, thermal and acoustic resistance. As a result, structural grade lightweight concrete can be used extensively in top floors of high rise construction, deck slabs, marine structures, screeds among others.
