PCMC’s anti-encroachment squad had to face stiff resistance from the land mafia but the demolition was resumed under heavy police protection.
The land mafia has been duping people of lakhs by selling them illegal houses. Hundreds of brick wall and tin rooftop homes have cropped up in the recent times even after the PCMC’s drive in May during which over 500 such structures were razed. in a day-long drive then. “A major portion of the site where the construction was happening comes under the Thane revenue wing which is why we have limitation in initiating the drive,” said Jamir Lengrekar, PCMC deputy municipal commissioner.
According to officials, a new hamlet has been in the making for the last few weeks. “The touts have duped us under the guise of providing affordable homes. And during the demolition all of them have vanished,” said one of the duped home buyers. PCMC commissioner Ganesh Deshmukh has instructed his men to crack the whip on such constructions which are rampant in the area that borders Thane and Raigad.
The chawls were about to be handed over to the buyers who had allegedly even paid the advance.
“We were waiting for police protection and finally got it today which helped us in razing the structures. We will continue to carry out such demolition drives against unauthorised structures,” Lengrekar said.
