A division bench of Chief Justice Krishna Murari and Justice Arun Palli passed these directions during the resumed hearing of the case on the PIL filed by Mohali Industries Association.

The bench directed Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (Gmada), Mohali municipal corporation and UT administration to demolish the illegal structures that fall within 100 metres of the boundary of the airport and submit a status report by the next date of hearing on October 16.

The Gmada told the court that it would pass appropriate orders regarding the demolition on Monday. The court also impleaded Zirakpur municipal council as a party, directing it to file a report on illegal constructions. The court was informed that there are many illegal structures in Pabhat village of Zirakpur and many are coming up overnight.

The airport authorities have raised the issue with Mohali additional municipal commissioner and forwarded the photographs of the illegal constructions.

A report of the IAF had recently said the airbase was under severe threat because of haphazard and unplanned growth of infrastructure along its boundary.

The report had pointed out that unauthorised constructions are so near the strategic installation that anyone can closely observe the activities inside the airfield by standing atop one of the buildings.
