    The CBI also recovered fixed deposit documents of Rs 1.7 crore and Rs 11 lakh in cash. Customs appraiser S S Upadhyay, booked with Gehani in the case, was found to possess three flats and three shops in Navi Mumbai besides a plot in Karjat. The CBI recovered documents showing that Upadhyay had purchased two more flats and sold these in Kharghar.

    It found he had purchased a plot of land in Lucknow and sold it. The CBI also found Rs 5.5 lakh in cash. Both Gehani and Upadhyay were posted at the Air Cargo Complex in Andheri, the oldest and the biggest in the country and which generates a revenue of around Rs 14,000 crore.

    Last September, the complex was in the eye of a storm after 17 customs officials, all examiners and appraisers, were suspended along with Mir Ranjan Negi, an assistant commissioner of customs and the hockey coach who inspired the film Chak De! India, and his colleague V M Ganoo when the CBEC unearthed smuggling rackets operating out of it.After the arrest of Gehani, the CBI conducted searches at his and Upadhyay’s respective residences. It found Gehani had paid Rs 1.02 crore to a builder to purchase a flat in an under-construction building in the name of his relative.

    From Upadhyay’s residence, the CBI recovered documents of purchase for three flats in Nerul and an equal number of shops in Kharghar and Vashi.
