Steel Secretary, Rakesh Singh, has been given additional charge as the Chairman and Managing Director of Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL). The decision came after the Appointments Committee of Cabinet denied an extension of tenure for the former Chairman and Managing Director C S Verma. The Public Enterprises Selection Board will now seek for a full time replacement. The whole process is expected to take another six months. The last time a ‘Maharatna’ PSU head was denied extension was in May 2006 when Subir Raha’s term was not extended as CMD of Oil and Natural Gas Corp. There are 7 state-owned companies which have been classified as ‘Maharatna’ or largest PSUs and include NTPC, Coal India, IOC, BHEL and GAIL.
