    Surat leads in launching Smart City projects

    SURAT: In their presentation at the national workshop on urban transformation held in New Delhi on June 23 Surat Municipal Corporation’s (SMC) smart city cell said that under the project out of 39 projects undertaken by it, by this weekend 26 would either be completed or reach project implementation stage. 

    For three projects that have big gestation periods detailed project reports (DPR) are being made while within two months the rest would be implemented. 

    In the first phase at a cost Rs 2,597 crore modern infrastructures is being built in the city. Some of the projects either completed or nearing completion are smart roads, automatic fare collection system, intelligent traffic control system (ITCS), city payment cards, fibre-to-home, command and control system, rainwater harvesting, biogas, solar LED street lighting, solar power generation and solid waste GPS tracking system. For logistical park, skywalk and French wells DPRs were being made. 

    SMC’s special commissioner for smart city mission M Nagrajan said that some cities are still in planning mode for the smart city project whereas they are on the verge of completing many proposed schemes. The three projects with higher gestation period would also begin soon. 

    Municipal commissioner M Thennarasan said that they are awaiting allotment of land from the state government for logistical park. The DPR for skywalk is likely to be ready by July 15 and work on the French wells will commence once survey is over and site for construction is determined.
