Tamil Nadu adopts fresh policy for thermal plants. The government will develop an environmental audit system.
This is to reward industries that use technologies that minimise adverse effects on natural resources.
It will also install continuous emission monitoring systems in all thermal power plants in the state.
To minimise environmental impact, these units will have to use efficient thermal technology and clean coal technology, the statement said.
Tthe government will formulate a comprehensive land use policy that accords priority to protection and preservation of vulnerable ecosystems.
Including in these are forests, bioreserves, wetlands, coastal bionetworks and such habitat.
Ecologists and activists welcomed the environment policy but also panned it for not addressing apparent contradictions.
