The AEC industry is in the midst of a seismic shift towards digital that is driving a global transformation of its business processes. For every AEC business, a major strategic goal today is delivering a transition into a digital business.

The business needs responsible for this global, industry-wide shift span across multiple aspects. On one hand, customers today demand ever complex structures with stated goals for sustainability and reduced energy consumption. The AEC industry itself has focused on reduced wastage of resources with due consideration to both environmental sustainability as well as costs. Further, there is a consistent pressure on project timelines and delivering projects on deadline is not only a matter of profitability for a construction company, but also increasingly a matter of building brand image and reputation.

Technology companies like Tekla have sought to address these needs through cutting-edge tools that support 3D Building Information Modeling, project management and cloud-based collaboration. Tekla recently annonced three new versions of its software for structural engineering, fabrication and construction teams: Tekla Structures 2018, Tekla Structural Designer 2018 and Tekla Tedds 2018. The solutions are targeted at stakeholders in structural steel and precast concrete, including designers, detailers and fabricators, concrete contractors, general contractors and structural engineers.

    The year production got faster

The latest updates to Tekla product family from Trimble promise to deliver smoother workflows. It also provides increased control and improved documentation through constructible BIM workflows. Professionals using the 2018 version can rely on the improved 3D modeling processes that make their work faster and more precise. Tekla’s 2018 versions will further allow better control over changes and lead to quicker production of drawings with less effort.

As Paul Wallett, Regional Director for Trimble Solutions (India and Middle East) said, “Trimble’s focus on advancing technology throughout the entire structural BIM workflow, from design to fabrication and construction, allows us to deliver the BIM tools that contribute to the transformation of the building and construction industry.”

    Tekla Structures 2018

The newest version of Tekla’s flagship 3D BIM software comes with several improvements and new features that make working with GA drawings faster and more convenient. It brings faster 3D modeling processes, more precise detailing, better control over changes and quicker production of drawings with less effort.

The new Drawing content manager offers a quick and easy way to review, add and locate drawing content, thus leading to better workflows. A more intelligent mark placement means professionals can produce better drawings faster and the drawings take less time tidying up. The improved routine for placing and aligning marks has become more intelligent with less scope for scrubbing, while making the drawings easier to read.

Professionals can now modify model objects properties directly from GA drawings. This saves time when they need to change a profile, for example. The constructible Tekla model with rebar now generates clear, easy to read rebar drawings with much less effort than before. It is now possible to display section views of rebar with single lines but filled rebar ends, and rebars no longer overlap in drawings and are easily adjusted and correctly visible.

Tekla Structures 2018 supports point clouds in all common formats. Users can now import processed, scanned information, then use the data to make decisions about and create their structural 3D model. The well-coordinated design will fit within the boundaries of the site or connect to existing structures, and verifying the location of existing structure is very easy. Additionally, snapping to point cloud points to add elements makes detailing even more accurate.

Particularly for the Indian construction industry that is increasingly competing at a global stage; an important new feature is faster 3D modeling with more precise detailing. Detailing bent plates is now more productive because of more powerful editing features. Further, Modeling spiral beams is now easier and more accurate, and users can export them to IFC. They can quickly model and detail stringers and steps with the Spiral staircase plugin, using spiral beams and bent plates. The new version also adds support for compound welds and double sided polygon welds, allowing users to model the welds more accurately and produce better drawings and NC files for welding robotics. The new property pane allows smoother, more efficient workflows for creating and modifying objects and object properties and copying properties between objects.

For Concrete professionals, Tekla Structures 2018 introduces new functionalities like Double wall details,Wall layout T-connections and Bricks on the wall, making modeling and detailing precast walls more productive. A new and easy toolset for modeling and detailing double wall structures makes the detailing process extremely efficient and prevents detailing and documentation errors. The wall layout now covers T-connections, which are quick, easy and flexible to create, adjust and modify. The tool automatically splits wall objects and creates detailed connections to all different layers in walls connected. If any of the walls in the T-connection changes, wall seams adapt to changes automatically.

Further, users can now create brick surfaces with detailed edge placing on precast walls. Bricks next to an opening and edges can be accurately placed to the required position, and dimensions for critical bricks automatically added to production drawings.

The 2018 version makes creating constructible formwork plans faster and easier with better modeling performance. It even adds new features in Formwork placing tool for walls. A new formwork placing toolset for floors expands the powerful solution to horizontal structures. An advanced tool set allows professionals to utilize concrete geometry and any wall system formwork components for Tekla Structures. New features include more intuitive placing of walers and bulkheads. Thanks to usability and automation improvements, model-based formwork planning, quantification and coordination are now quicker, easier and more flexible than ever. The new toolset also expands formwork planning tools to horizontal structures for quick and easy formwork planning, automated quantification and efficient coordination.

Tekla Structures 2018 delivers more productive, collaborative and accurate Pour planning and management. It brings structured information easily at hand. The development in the unique pour technology allows more efficient and user friendly managing, quantifying and reporting all information related to pour units. New features for rebar model management and drawings bring quicker and more flexible release management documentation.

Further, Tekla Structures 2018 features enhanced analysis frame generation, allowing users to now create constructible analytical frames. Structural simulation is improved, and producing accurate steel and concrete analytical frames is now faster. Slabs, beams, walls, braces and secondary members like windposts and purlins are now created exactly as you want and construction requires. These improvements can save design time.

For engineers, Tekla structural engineering workflow is now smoother and faster, requiring less re-modeling and editing. The improved, connected analytical frame model in Tekla Structures now transfers easily into Tekla Structural Designer and vice versa. The analytical and BIM requirements of a multimaterial physical and analysis model are not compromised, and the connected model is complete with openings in walls and slabs. Professionals switching from duplicate modeling for analysis and design must be prepared for a dramatic efficiency increase.

    Tekla Structural Designer

The Tekla Structural Designer 2018 delivers integrated design, analysis and BIM. Both design and analysis are combined into one simple and efficient model-based solution, with improved analysis options for both concrete and steel delivering greater control and enhanced efficiency.

The new version adds rigorous slab deflection analysis with a new, simplified and automated approach to the design of flat slab deflections. Now, professionals don’t need any other solution for analysis or duplicate their modeling. With the new version, loading sequences are automated in order to reduce analysis overhead; which helps save days of engineering time. The final design is more efficient.

The new version also adds new design codes so users need to do less manual work. This feature is particularly useful for Indian companies serving customers around the world.
