Move over, IGI airport, there’s going to be a new airport in town. Plans to expand Delhi’s Jewar airport and rope in private airlines are afoot and boy, are they ambitious.
The upcoming Jewar airport is one of the most highly anticipated developments coming to Delhi. Earlier an air force base, a part of it has been let out for commercial usage. Now, the new plans for the airport suggest that Delhi’s Jewar airport will be the biggest in India and the third largest in the world. The major upgrade will be the six runways, which is a sharp increase from the three at IGI airport. Concurrently, two of the largest airports- O’Hare International Airport, Chicago and Fort Worth International Airport, Dallas, have eight and seven runways respectively. Jewar airport will come in at a close third against these airports, along with a few others.
Apart from that, another major upgrade will be the massive 5,000-hectare aviation hub. All the new facilities, runways, hangars and boarding gates will come up within the area. As of now, Jewar airport has a total of two runways. There were plans to expand it to four, but that has been increased to six.
The distance between Jewar Airport and the existing IGI T3 airport is around 70 kilometers. For residents of Noida and Greater Noida, the existing airport is too inaccessible.
Another reason for going ahead with the project is to assert India’s dominance in the international fora. This not only marks a new era in Indian history but also heralds a more technologically advanced age. This airport will take off some air passenger traffic burden away from the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Additionally, it is estimated that this new airport will be built to handle 50 million passengers per year.
The Jewar Airport project was approved by the Aviation Ministry back in June 2015. Additionally, the cost of the project is expected to be around ₹20,000 crores, a massive amount in itself. Jewar airport will be connected to the metro with NMRC’s Aqua Line that runs from Noida to Greater Noida.
The project is being headed by a public-private partnership, meaning that a lot of big players are involved in the project. Also, the airport will be equipped with complete state of the art facilities, and world-class amenities.
