Tripura govt to provide land to 9,500 homeless families this year

The Tripura government has moved a proposal to provide land to 9500 homeless families in the state. The state government, in a recent review meeting of the revenue department presided over by chief minister Biplab Deb, proposed the introduction of a provision in the Tripura Land Revenue and Land Reforms Act, 1960 to allot land to 9500 homeless families belonging to the BPL category by the end of December.

Revenue minister NC Debbarma said 1.27 lakh families are yet to receive the land which was allotted to them under the Right to Forest Act, 2006. “We will recover all land that has been occupied and redistribute them. We can give a partial exemption to the land that has been allotted to religious trusts,” he added.

Debbarma also claimed that the previous Left Front government had allotted land, meant for accommodation of homeless people, to ineligible persons and institutions. “We are investigating the land allotment process followed by the previous government and some violations have been identified. In many cases, precious government land was allotted to private parties at minimum cost. We are reviewing these deals now,” Debbarma added.

A large number of party offices have been built illegally on government land under the previous regime, he said, adding that the BJP-IPFT government began dismantling these structures soon after they came to power.
