The Defence Estates Office (DEO) provided the figure in a reply to a RTI application. The reply to applicant advocate Ashok Mishra reads, there are 44 bungalows under the DEO and illegal structures have been constructed on premises of 22 of them.
DEO public information officer Ajay Debhane said in the reply that all restaurants, hotels and marriage gardens, which were constructed on defence land in the bungalows and gardens were opened without any permission. The business establishments were running illegally as the DEO had not given permission to anyone of them.
It also states that the business establishments were not paying tax or lease rent to the Army.Many big shopping malls have come up in bungalow number 67 and marriage gardens have been constructed on land belonging to the British era.
