    UT panel asks Chandigarh housing board to obtain wildlife clearance

    The UT’s State Expert Appraisal Committee, has directed Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB), to obtain wildlife clearance from the concerned department for the UT employees housing scheme.

    The meeting was held on March 11 under the chairmanship of Suresh Chand Jain, in which the project’s environmental clearance was discussed in detail.

    The committee suggested certain changes to incorporate in the proposal which includes obtaining wildlife clearance and permission of tree cutting from the concerned department. After these changes, the proposal will again be discussed in the next meeting.

    On January 2, the Union cabinet chaired by PM Modi had approved the proposal of UT employees housing scheme, which was pending since 2008.

    Recently, the Centre had submitted before the Punjab and Haryana high court that the proposal to allot 61.5 acres of government land to the CHB for the purpose had been sent to the cabinet secretariat for placing before the cabinet at an early date for its decision.

    Chandigarh administration approved a scheme namely ‘Self-financing Housing Scheme — 2008’ for employees of the administration, accordingly, a total land area of 73.3 acre was earmarked for construction of 3930 dwelling units for the UT employees. Out of which 11.8 acre was already in possession of CHB.

    In the instant proposal, 61.5 acre of government land was to be allotted to the CHB.

    CHB was appointed as the nodal agency for implementation of the scheme. Accordingly, the CHB advertised the Self-Financing Housing Scheme on leasehold basis for 99 years for the employees of the administration in 2008.
