The Vijayawada airport expansion plan is progressing fast and the proposal to develop an integrated passenger terminal to handle both Domestic and International passengers at Vijayawada airport has reached the ministry of finance’s Public Investment Board (PIB).
The extension plan will have special attraction for the airport and the expanded runway will help to facilitate huge aircraft. Moreover, the success of direct flights between Vijayawada- Singapore has energized the Vijayawada airport.
Soon after the file is cleared by the PIB, bid will be available and then the construction will commence. Currently, the old passenger terminal is being used to handle international passengers and there is a separate terminal for domestic passengers.
Amongst the new infrastructure at this airport a new terminal building with car-parking facilities and associated infrastructure have been built. This terminal has a steel and glass structure and has state-of-the-art modern passenger friendly facilities such as baggage handling system, arrival baggage claim carousels, central air-conditioning, public address system, fire alarm system, Flight Information Display System (FIDS), CCTV for surveillance, check-in counters with Common Use Terminal Equipment (CUTE)
AAI intends to build an integrated bigger terminal for both domestic and international operations for which a Project Management Consultant (PMC) is also appointed for the construction of new integrated passenger terminal. Within 24 months from the day works begin, the new integrated terminal should be ready.
On completion, Vijayawada’s integrated terminal will be the biggest in the state at 31,000 sq mt, much larger than Vizag airport’s integrated terminal that is spread over 21,000 sq mts. Once the project is running, the new integrated terminal can handle 1,200 passengers 600 domestic and 600 internationals with 24 check-in counters and eight gates.
The new state-of-the-art terminal spread across 35,000 sq. meter is being developed. The terminal will handle 1,200 passengers every day It is learnt that the integrated terminal building that will come up in the Gannavaram airport campus is expected to cost Rs 420 crore.
