The West Bengal Government has taken up water supply projects worth Rs. 6,000 crore, mostly focussing on rural areas. According to State Public Health and Engineering Minister, Subrata Mukherjee, the aim is to provide 100 per cent sanitation coverage and at least 50 per cent piped water supply to rural households by 2017.
Currently, there are piped water connection in 55-60 per cent of rural areas with 22-25 per cent of rural households having dedicated water supply. At least, 68 per cent of the population lives in rural areas.
